Online shopping transformed the retail industry as we knew it and made the lives of customers much easier, appealing to our increasingly busy lives and offering convenience for many.
Things are now set to change once again with the development of shopping sites that have been specifically designed for mobile phones.
Leading the way is Marks and Spencer who became the UK’s first retailer to cater for the mobile internet market when they launched their new site on May 12th. M&S decided to make the move after discovering that their online store was difficult for customers to use on their mobile, unless of course they own an iPhone.
Dave Hughes, Director of M&S Direct, said: “The new site allows customers to browse and buy from their mobile device without the frustrations that come with trying to do the same on a traditional website.”
This is not the first time that the retail giant has been one step ahead of the game when it comes to embracing technology. In 2008, they started using mobile marketing in the form of text messages and a year after that they became one of the first British stores to use social networking sites to increase brand awareness.
Mr Hughes hopes that the development of their site will attract more online shoppers and anticipates that it will bring about “a major step forward in mobile retailing”.
